Still Life
1st week Photography
On the first week of college we set up a still life using one object placing it in different surroundings like college and around town, to do this we use a teapot. My favourite image is number 7441. I like this specific photograph as the actual teapot in the foreground is clear and precise, however as you look at the background the photo becomes more distorted due to being out of focus. this is called a shallow depth of field.
Photographer Research
Irving Penn
I like the way Irving Penn has thought about the photography as they have thought about composition and the way they have been arranged. I find their work interesting as the have thought about light and shadow, also have placed objects behind other objects creating a sense of depth to the image. I find the second image interesting also as they have thought about what natural effects a rounded bottle can create for example by looking through it makes the person behind it look smaller however you can see the ‘real life’ size person around the bottle.
Joseph Sudek
I like these two images by Joseph Sudek as he has chosen simple items but has made the images look old by changing the lightness and darkness of the room creating shadows. The images also have an old feel to them most likely because of the lighting used and the fact that the images are in black and white. He has also created a gloomy dull feel to the image. I like the use of shadows which he has created giving the image much more of an effect.
Macro Photography
We used the macro lense on objects in a still life set up. the macro lense allowed us to take close up images which were clear to view and detailed. the macro lense also gives a better sense of tone and depth is created more with the macro lense. My favourite images are image 5391 because it is very close to the skull however the detail on the skull is precise and very clear. Also i like the image number 5383, i like this image as it is also a very close and detailed photo, however is distorted in the background which gives the image a nice distorted look.
Macro Photographer Research
Joakim uses the macro lense mainly on natural wildlife such as flowers, bugs and insects. He also revolves his work around water and just drops of water up close. I like the photographs in which he takes as they ares so clear and pristine, they attract your attention.
Experimentation with shutter speed.
These are the best of the many in which i took,
These images were taken to experiment with shutter speed. We worked in groups to create photographs using slow and fast shutter speeds. i tried to create some 'sharp' photographs and some 'blurry', distorted photographs. i gained this by making the shutter speed quicker for clear photographs and slowed the shutter speed down to create some distorted photographs.
These are my two favourite images taken.
I like this image as the background is very dark in tone, with the light which you can see coming through. I also like the image because of the fact that the leaf is almost highlighted in the light which makes it rather distinctive and bring is out as the light and dark tones contrast together.
I like this image as i took it in a busy environment, also i waited for a bus to come past as i wanted the smudge effect to show as the bus passed. I also like the image due to the fact that the foreground of the image is quite clear and the background is fair blurry which in my opinion gives the image a nice effect.
Shutter Speed Photographer Research:
Markus Bahlmann,
Markus concentrates mostly in lanscapes and cities. He also concentrates in the movement and shutter speed, this creates the look of lines within the photograph. I like the look as its generally bold and theres a multiple amount of colours and tones in the work.
Drawing with Light:
I spent around fifteen minutes in a photography studio trying to use light to create an effect. I had the shutter speed at thirty seconds each time, this lets more light into the lense, this gave the photos an effect of light moving, to do this I used a torch to draw around the objects which were heavy blocks.
My two favourite photographs:
I like the above photo as the actual photo is semi abstract as you can tell what it is to a point however could not be recognizable at the same time. I also like the fact that by flashing the light through red paper has casted a red glow onto the objects giving the photo some sense of colour, and the fact that you can see the red glow at the top of the photograph gives it a sort of spooky feeling.
i like the above photograph as the photograph is very dark and has a spooky feel. Also the fact that the light is at a minimum creates a nice glow on the objects. The image again is semi abstract as you can sort of tell what the image is but at the same time you can't. This basically is simplifying the image down to blocks of tone.
Pablo Picasso:
It was 1949 when Pablo picasso was introduced to gjon mili, a photographer who at the time worked for LIFE
magazine, where he demonstrated some of his images of ice skaters with lights fixed to their skates, jumping in the dark.
fascinated from the results, the spanish artist then conceived a series of projected light drawings in a dark room with
two separate cameras and a small electric light attempting to ‘paint’ his versions of centaurs, bulls and greek profiles.
Examples of manipulation, including adjustments, filters and layers.
Original Image
Example of using a Filter.
I manipulated the image by using a filter creating the look that it was dark and i like the effect of the people in the image being just a black shadow.
Example of using Layers.
I used the layers to create a 3D effect, i did this by altering the opacity on one of the images and moved the other image slightly up.
Example of using Adjustments, such as hue/saturation and contrast.
I altered the image hue and saturation to change the colour of some background and the shadows i then, changed the brightness to get the very clear and bold colours, i feel that this makes the image more interesting as the image is distorted and eye catching due to the color.
The Figure
Narrative Photography
As a group of three we came up with an idea each. The first idea that we thought of was somebody sliding down a slide on a park, we took multiple images to create a short digital story. We then did this of somebody walking up and then down a staircase and finally did this when somebody was closing a locker.
Film Photography
In groups of three we went out and thought of our own individual ideas, in which we then could create a story like film. I bought some chocolate minstrels and took pictures once I had moved them into a different place on the table, I hope this would give the effect of them moving in a circular way. After we had taken the photos using the film camera I then developed them in complete darkness. firstly I left the film roll in developer for 8 minutes, during the 8 minutes I had to shake the tub for 30 seconds ever 1 minute, I then put the roll in the stop liquid for 1 minute again shaking it every 30 seconds. Finally I had to place the roll in the fixer liquid for 5 minutes and again shaking it every 1 minute for 30 seconds. After the process we then emptied the contents of the fixer down a drain then filled the tub again with water and shook the tub 10 times, I then emptied the tub again and filled it with fresh water then shook it 20 times, I then emptied the tub again and then filled it with more water and shook 40 times. After this whole process I then hung the film in a dryer to dry.
Evaluation
I researched the artists on the internet, both Sandy Skoglund and Jeff Wall. I was draw to Sandy's work although it is simple, it makes you think about the persons feeling within the photo and there body language which suggests certain elements within the photography, such as loneliness and depression. Jeff wall's work also got my attention, because of the suspense within the image, well i feel that there is a element of suspense and fear within the photographs which i looked at. Their work influenced me to create a what would look like a lonely and empty scene to shoot, i took the local wreck which was empty at the time and also it was a dull day which gave the photograph a much more 'unhappy' feeling to it. The form of research in which i used is secondary research, as i did not physically go to a gallery or actually visit the image in a place i just looked at the image on the internet and you need to go to a place and physically take the photo yourself to call it primary research.
I researched narrative photography because i like the fact that it tells a story within an image, obviously there are different types of photography which are used in everyday life such as Abstract, Contemporary, Historical, Photojournalism, Commercial and Editorial photography. Abstract photography is just like Abstract art, it concentrates on color, pattern and shape usage within the photograph. contemporary photography is more modern of the time and historical photography is the reverse such as old building which are demolished and falling apart, also the photograph could just look old, its basically back in time. Photojournalism photography is images that you are more likely to find in a news article or which has a story to go with the photograph. Mainly people who work for newspaper companies are photojournalism photographers.
Personally i would say that historical and modern combined influenced my work, as i wanted to create a modern image but make it out as it was in a gloomy setting with the girl in the image looking lonely on a park. Just as Jeff Ball did, took an average day photography but made a fearful and old feel to it. you would find photography everywhere, you would probably see abstract in a gallery or on a company website or something familiar, and i think you would find contemporary and historical photography in many leaflets which advertise or make people want to go to things, also you would find commercial and editorial photography in adverts on television posters etc. and finally you would find photojournalism in magazines and newspapers etc.
I think that i would place my work in a gallery of some sort, or in a aiding leaflet or something, however i don't think people would understand my personal thinking behind the work.
My photography research!
Images i took to create the layered image.
Before i could layer any images or edit them i had to go into town and photograph buildings and areas in which i found interesting to them create images from these specific images.
layering.
To start the project off i went out into town and took images of various places that i thought looked interesting in my own way and that would look good put together.
Above are three of my favorite edits, i created these using photoshop adding different images as layers, i then change to opacity to create an almost like see through image. On the first image i used the eraser to make the image fade into each other, i also used the eraser on the right to show more of the front image rather than the back. On the second image i used the effect of posterise, which i feel worked quite well
Panoramic view.
To crete a panoramic view i went out around town taking images of the same place but at different points. I then came back to college and used photoshop to put the images together and edit them slightly so that it looks like it is one whole image. I managed this by changing the opacity of the images and also using he eraser to erase the edges and to make it look like they join, by merging them together. below are two of my favorite ones.
This one above, i created a sort of journey to a road in town from college and put them together to create an almost ongoing journey. To do this i just took images at different points leading to the road. On this one i did use some effects i used the lighten effect and also the subtract effect to get the image like sepia.
Film Photography:
Evaluation
We had to develop time based photos and i produced the panoramic and layering images, i went round town taking photos of different areas and putting them together almost like a story and i also produced layers using different photos together. i found producing them fairly easy to do and i was quite happy with the finished photos, especially the panoramic view of around college, which i took on top of the feilden street car park.
Film Photography:
This is my photography (double exposure) using a film camera. I took various pictures of one area at various points. this then resulted in the pictures above, which i am quite pleased with.
